Electronic components Resistors SMD Resistors Chip Resistors

Resistors are two-terminal components used for limiting current, voltage division, and timing applications. Resistors complement ‘active’ components like op-amps, micro-controllers, or integrated circuits for a variety of operations like biasing, filtering, and pulling up I/O lines. Variable resistors can be used to change the properties of a circuit. Current sensing resistors are used to measure the current in a circuit. The unit of resistance is Ohms (Ω). It includes:

  • Carbon Composition Resistors
  • Ceramic Composition Resistors
  • Chassis Mount Resistors / Current Sense Resistors
  • Film Resistors / High Frequency/RF Resistors
  • MELF Resistors / Metal Foil Resistors
  • Metal Oxide Resistors / SMD Resistors / Chip Resistors
  • Through Hole Resistors / Variable Resistors
  • Wirewound Resistors / Resistor Hardware
  • Resistor Kits / Resistor Networks & Arrays

Products Function

Chip SMD Resistors

Chip resistors are typically surface mount devices (SMD) in that they do not have leads like through hole technology (THT) devices. Instead, they are mounted directly onto a printed circuit board (PCB). Chip resistors are almost always square or rectangular, with the length and width of the device determining their power ratings. Chip resistors may use a variety of technology or construction types, each with significant advantages and disadvantages. Common types are thin film and thick film.

Wirewound Resistors

A wirewound resistor is an electrical passive device that limits or restricts current flow in a circuit. Wirewound resistors are constructed using a conductive wire. The conductive wire is then wound around a non-conductive core. The conductive wire can be made of varying alloys and thickness to control the resistance value.

Variable Resistors and Potentiometers

The potentiometer consists of three terminals among which two are fixed and one is variable. The two fixed terminals of the potentiometer are connected to both ends of the resistive element called track and third terminal is connected to the sliding wiper. The wiper that moves along the resistive element varies the resistance of the potentiometer. The resistance of the potentiometer is changed when the wiper is moved over the resistive path.

Through-Hole Resistors

Through-Hole resistors are two-terminal components that come with long, pliable leads which can be stuck into a breadboard or hand-soldered into a prototyping PCB. These resistors are usually more useful in breadboarding and prototyping.

Resistor Arrays

A resistor array or resistor network is a single package that contains two or more resistors. The package will include multiple leads by which the network can be made part of a larger circuit. Resistor arrays are combinations of multiple resistors, which are configured into a pattern. They primarily act as a voltage divider, which split the voltage in a circuit to smaller amounts.

Resistor Kits

Resistor kits are mostly boxes which are used to store a set of specially packed resistors by standard values and application area. Kits usually contain resistors of the same series, package size and composition, but they differ in resistance value.

Thermistors

A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance is dependent on temperature – a resistor in which the flow of electric current changes rapidly with a small change in temperature. Thermistors are used for voltage regulation, volume control, time delays, and circuit protection.
